Larson XL Simmental is a family run ranch located in the southwest corner of North Dakota. This is extreme country with the pendulum swinging from years of plenty to lean years where one isolated thunderstorm can make all the difference for the year. This is short grass country where we run 300 purebred cows on 6000 owned and rented acres.
Bill and Colleen Larson along with their son Todd and daughter-in-law Judy are the third and fourth generation Larson's to live on this ranch. John L Larson homesteaded here in the early 1900's and raised Red Poll cattle. His son John M Larson and wife Tootie partnered with him in the 40's and they gradually developed a Polled Hereford herd of cattle. In 1969, John M. used his first Simmental semen on some Hereford cows and it's been Simmental ever since. Bill and Colleen joined the operation in 1974 after Bill graduated from NDSU. Todd and Judy came aboard in 2001 after Todd completed teaching 4 years of high school math, science and computers.
Our goal at Larson XL Simmental is to produce moderate framed easy fleshing cattle that adapt easily to our harsh conditions. We sell about 80 bulls in our annual bull sale to mostly commercial cattlemen that use these bulls in a crossbreeding program. We utilize artificial insemination with an emphases in calving ease and carcass traits. Our cow herd is mostly polled with 80% being black.
